+ How Far in Advance Should I Place My Order?
This depends on the type of cake you’re ordering. If you need a small cake at short notice, we can have a Petite Cake ready within three business days.
Our buttercream-frosted Classic Cakes can be ordered 1-2 weeks in advance, though it’s best to give us more lead time than this if your event is taking place during peak wedding season (May-September).
If you’re looking for a themed/novelty cake for a birthday, baby shower, rehearsal dinner, etc, we recommend ordering your cake 1-3 months in advance. It’s particularly crucial for us to have lots of lead time if your cake needs to be sculpted or carved (e.g. a car, boat, 3-D animal, designer purse, building, etc), as there’s a lot of planning and preparation involved in constructing the internal armatures for these cakes.
For more intricate tiered cakes (including larger custom wedding cakes), please note that our calendar can fill up 4-8 months in advance, particularly during peak wedding season. We highly recommend getting in touch with us as soon as you have set the date of your event.
+ How Do I Place an Order?
Please fill out and submit our contact form. We will respond to you within 24 hours to provide a quote or to set up a design appointment. (If you don't receive a response from us within 24 hours, you may have a hyper-active spam filter.)

+ What Do Your Cakes Cost?
Pricing depends on which of our services you would like to use.
PETITE CAKES are pre-designed single-tiered cakes, starting at $100. These cakes are available to order with three business days' notice, and can’t be customized beyond the options presented in the catalog. Once you've looked through the catalog and have chosen your design, you can order your Petite Cake through our dedicated online form.
CLASSIC CAKES are pre-designed multi-tiered cakes that start at $300. These cakes are available to order at relatively short notice (1-2 weeks usually will do!), and we offer limited options for customization. You can view all the designs in the range here, and you can find our price list for Classic Cakes here. Order your Classic Cake by sending an inquiry through our contact form.
CUSTOM CAKES would include our more intricate wedding cakes, as well as themed/sculpted cakes for any type of celebration. Pricing starts at $10/serving, and more detailed cakes are typically priced between $15-$20 per serving (depending on the complexity of the artwork involved). For events between October 1st and April 30th, our minimum order for any custom cake is $500. For events during wedding season (May 1st through September 30th), our minimum MAY increase to $1,000 -- depending on the demand for your particular date. If your venue is more than 50 miles away from our cake studio (one-way), or the cake delivery involves a ferry trip, our peak-season minimum order is $1,500 (not including the delivery fee). After a design consultation, either over email or in person, we will give you a quote for your custom cake.
+ Do You Make Sheet Cakes?
The answer is yes, and no! We don't make traditional sheet cakes -- which are typically short slabs, with 1-2 layers of cake and perhaps some filling in between. We also don't make decorated sheet cakes (like the rectangles you've seen at the grocery store with an edible image on top). We specialize in custom edible art, and cranking out sheet cakes just wouldn't fit the brief.
That said, we DO make undecorated cakes, as accompaniments to a decorated cake for events with more than 80-100 guests. These undecorated cakes are called "kitchen" cakes, because they're delivered to the catering area at your venue and are plated there, rather than being placed out on display. What's special about our kitchen cakes is that they also contain four layers of cake and three layers of filling -- just the same as any of our decorated cake tiers. So, our kitchen cakes plate up into beautiful slices that look very similar to their decorated counterparts when they're served to your guests.
If you're having a larger event (150-200 guests or more), we actually encourage you to have a kitchen cake in the back, to accompany the tiered cake that is out on display. This will greatly enhance your caterer's ability to get all the plated cake slices out to your guests in a timely manner, as the kitchen cake gives the staff a head start. This way, you get a beautiful tiered cake on display, for your cutting ceremony and for the visual interest and excitement that a stunning cake can bring to a celebration -- PLUS you get the extra servings you need, in the back. The overall cost of the cake will be contained, as we don't have to decorate and stack all 150-200+ servings of cake.
+ Can I Schedule a Tasting Appointment?
We'd love for you to taste our cakes! We launch a new menu each year, which always includes some of our best selling flavors of all time, as well as a few new ones that have resulted from playing around in our kitchen. You can read more about how we do tastings here.
After we chat via email about the type of cake you’re looking for, we’ll either invite you to our cake studio for a design consultation and tasting, or we’ll arrange a time for you to swing by and pick up a Honey Crumb Tasting Kit.
There is a non-refundable $75 fee for in-person consultations, which includes a tasting of three flavors of your choice from our menu. We provide enough cake samples for 3 people; let us know if you're planning to have a large crowd join you for the tasting!
If you choose to pick up a Tasting Kit to go, you can choose any flavors you'd like to sample from our menu for $20 each. Or, if you like surprises (and trust our chef!), we can make you a Chef's Choice Tasting Kit instead (three samples for $40, based on whatever's fresh from our ovens that particular day).
+ How Do I Pay For My Cake and Secure My Date?
For any order of $500 or greater, we require payment of a 50% date reservation fee at the time of booking, with the balance due two weeks prior to delivery/pickup. This payment is non-refundable, and is transferable to another event within one (1) calendar year of booking, entirely at our discretion and dependent on our availability. Cake orders placed with less than two weeks’ notice, or cake orders of $499 or less, must be paid for in full at the time of booking. We accept checks, cash, Venmo, PayPal, and bank transfers via Zelle. PayPal transactions are subject to a card processing fee of 2.99% + $0.30.
+ What Size Cake Do I Need?
The answer depends on the purpose you’d like your cake to serve. Will the cake be served for dessert, after a sit-down dinner? Are you hosting a party where cake is the main attraction and perhaps a light meal or heavy hors d'oeuvres will be served beforehand? In these instances, we’d recommend ordering a dessert-sized portion of cake (1” x 2” x 5”) for 85-90% of your guest count — otherwise you run the risk of running out, which is a problem we can’t fix for you on the night.
OR, will your cake be on display for most of the evening and only cut toward the end? Will some of your guests have gone before you cut the cake? Are you planning to serve another type of dessert (supplied by your caterer) before you serve the cake? In these instances, we recommend ordering enough cake for 60% of your guests, and asking your caterer to cut “coffee-sized” pieces (these are approximately 1” x 1-1/4” x 5” finger portions of cake).
Other points to consider: How big of an impact do you want your cake to make? How large is the area where it will be displayed? Is a beautiful piece of edible art high on your list of priorities? Or, would you prefer to have a smaller decorated cake out on display, with a kitchen cake in the back for the additional servings you need?

+ I Really Don’t Like Fondant. Can You Help Me?
We have a considerably different approach to fondant than what is standard for the baking industry.
Firstly, in nine years, we’ve tasted and experimented with pretty much ALL the commercially available fondant varieties out there — and we’ve narrowed it down to just ONE luxurious brand of fondant that gets the thumbs-up from all of us at Honey Crumb, as well as our clients. It contains zero trans fat and its flavor is reminiscent of marshmallows, vanilla, and cocoa butter. Also, it is soft and pliable and doesn’t dry into a crusty skin on your cake.
Secondly, we are lucky enough to have a beautiful, shiny, commercial sheeter. Not all bakeries have one, because they’re very big and very expensive. The bonus for you is that our sheeter can roll fondant to less than 1/8” (this is very thin!) -- producing a perfectly smooth canvas for us to decorate, which doesn't detract from the flavors and textures of the cake and fillings beneath. Indeed, some say, our fondant work is so delicate it's almost imperceptible when eaten. No gummy, thick fondant here — it’s not supposed to be that way!
Thirdly, we always frost our cakes with Swiss meringue buttercream before we cover them with this ultra-thin layer of fondant. This way, you get the best of both worlds — the beautiful matte finish & incredible artistic potential of fondant, and the delicious taste of a silky meringue-based buttercream. We are happy to give you a sample.

+ How Should I Handle My Cake After Picking It Up?
Custom cakes should be kept at room temperature for a minimum of 3-4 hours before serving, and should never be stored in a walk-in or industrial refrigerator. Very large cakes may require more time to warm to room temperature before eating. Most of our cakes can safely remain out of the fridge, at room temperature, for 8 hours (weather permitting). High temperatures or a very humid climate will significantly reduce the display time of your cake.
If your cake is being eaten immediately following pickup or delivery, please let us know and we will take your cake out of our fridge a few hours before. Cakes are like red wine -- they taste so much better at room temperature than when they're fridge-cold! If your cake is too cold when you eat it, it will seem much denser and drier than it really is.
Custom sugar figurines (toppers) and sugar flowers are best kept at room temperature. Do not put sugar flowers or figurines in the fridge or freezer, as the humidity will cause them to wilt or dissolve.
If you're transporting your cake over a long distance on a warm day, we recommend keeping the AC blasting (wear a sweater if you need to!). A chilled cake is much more stable during transport than a warm one. Custom cakes should never be kept in an unoccupied vehicle during warm weather, as the buttercream may melt and the sugar decorations may be ruined.
+ Can I Drop By & Visit Your Studio?
Sorry to disappoint, but we’re not a retail bakery. Honey Crumb is a custom cake studio, which means we don’t sell baked goods to the public each day, we make everything to order, and we are open by appointment only.
We have a beautiful 2,500 sq ft commercial kitchen and showroom for tastings in lower Queen Anne, and we’d love for you to see it, but please send us an inquiry first.
+ Do You Deliver?
Yes we do, but it depends on the size of the cake, and on the distance to your venue. Typically, delivery and setup by a member of our team is available for stacked cakes of three tiers or more, or sculpted/novelty cakes to serve more than 50 guests. Our standard delivery range is within one hour of downtown Seattle (one-way). Our availability to deliver cakes to venues beyond this radius is determined on a case-by-case basis.
Our delivery fee within Seattle city limits is $80. For venues outside the city, the delivery fee is based on distance from our studio, calculated using Google Maps. Some cakes require more intricate setup/assembly on site, which may add to the delivery fee. We will discuss this with you during the design phase.
Please note: Not all cakes can be delivered personally by us. Certain orders (e.g. Petite Cakes, and two-tiered cakes) are PICKUP ONLY -- in which case, the cake would be carefully packaged by us, and we would provide thorough instructions for handling/transporting the cake.
We are not responsible for any damage that may occur once a cake has been picked up from our studio by a client.
+ Do You Ship Your Cakes or Sugar Flowers?
No. We’ve found that shipping cakes or other fragile sugar decorations only leads to heartache. All of our cakes are either picked up by the client or hand-delivered by us. If your venue is in a far-flung state or country, and you'd still like to have a Honey Crumb custom cake, that's fantastic and we'd love to help! Your cake will need its own seat on the plane, and so will our chef.
+ Any Other Policies I Should Know About?
Orders are not confirmed until we receive payment. For orders of $500 or more, the first payment is a 50% non-refundable date reservation fee. If we do not receive this payment within five (5) business days of receipt of our quote, your date may become unavailable. For orders of $499 or less, payment in full is required upon booking.
Payment for a Petite Cake order must be received no later than three business days prior to your intended pickup date, or your order will be canceled.
Wedding cake designs and flavor selections need to be finalized at least thirty (30) days before the event. Modifications after this point cannot be guaranteed, and may incur additional charges.
Tastings must be paid for by 72 hours prior to the scheduled in-person appointment (or Tasting Kit pickup date), to give us enough time to prepare your chosen cake flavors. If we do not receive payment for the tasting by the deadline, your appointment will be canceled.
