Happy Fourth!

In celebration of Independence Day yesterday, and to stir sweetly patriotic sentiments in these fraught times, what else was there to do but make cookies? (Of course, I did also go on a long walk in the park with my husband to take in the merry crowds and fireworks.)

I used a little orange oil to flavor the shortbread dough, and had some specialty cutters on hand to make flag and map shapes. The baked cookies were iced with a thin smear of buttercream, and topped with a delicious layer of marshmallow fondant, rolled ultra-thin. Finally, I handpainted the cookies using edible gel, mixed with a little vodka to make 'paint'. I have to say, they were scrumptious.
